#BronzeAge #Archaeology #AncientHistoryAll This For A Golden Apple? The Judgement Of Paris EXPLAINED.MoAn Inc.2024-06-20 | Let's get one thing straight - mythology changes A LOT. There are so many differing versions of each story that my only advice to you all is to bear this in mind! If you need any SPECIFIC version of the characters discussed in this video or their narrative, please see the various texts in which they are addressed. This video is PURELY a very general overview of the Judgement Of Paris, but do remember that there is a lot of nuance here in the different ancient authors.
BUT! The Judgement Of Paris is SUCH an important moment in all of mythology that it simply had to be mentioned in this playlist! It's genuinely difficult to read any mythological tale without some reference to the Trojan War or the heroes who played a role within it, so it's only right that we highlight what started the whole fiasco in the first place.

#Hera #JenniferSaint #GreekMythologyA Conversation with IRVING FINKEL About Ancient Mesopotamian GhostsMoAn Inc.2024-05-09 | You lovely nerds are in for a treat today: normally I would edit these conversation episodes down to under an hour, however I simply couldn’t bring myself to cut any of my chat with Dr Finkel. Therefore, the only editing that took place was when I cut some extended pauses by either Dr Finkel or myself when we were thinking of how to formulate our thoughts AND any distracting stutters (they’re always bound to happen on these longer calls, regardless of the guest). That is quite literally it.
Before Dr Finkel answered my first question, I also edited out a small moment where he asked if I wanted the long version or the short version of his “context” story. Since neither of us was pressed for time, I CHOSE to have Dr Finkel explain his background in the long version of his story. There was no point leaving this little back and forth in considering the answer is so long, so I also cut that to ensure the episode could begin as quickly as possible.
Aside from extended pauses, the stutters and that one back and forth, absolutely no actual content has been cut nor edited out from this conversation. If you guys prefer the episodes to be under an hour (as I’ve done for the past 3 years), do let me know and I’ll make sure to stick to that timing in the future. However, if you guys like the extended episodes then I’ll make a conscious effort to upload more unedited videos.
**JUST A NOTE** : This is not to say that every conversation I’ve had on the channel has been long and I’ve cut them down. The vast majority of guests can only give me a certain amount of time, and generally speaking, you guys get those videos unedited. However, when I do get the chance to have these guests on for longer, THAT’S when my editing hat normally comes on and I trim and cut the content down. So if you guys like this episode in its entirety, I’ll make an effort to upload longer episodes when my guests allow me to have such time with them rather than making all the episodes *roughly* the same length.
Also, I did a terrible job describing "Soul" to Dr Finkel so please don't come for me in the comments. Watching that part back was painful, but I stand by giving Dr Finkel the homework of watching it because that film is a MASTERPIECE.

#AncientHistory #RomanEmpire #AncientRomeJason & The Argonauts As Historical Fiction? Sign Me Up!MoAn Inc.2024-02-15 | Today I'm reviewing Mark Knowles' "Blades Of Bronze" series, including Argo, Jason and Hades. For those of you who are regulars here, you'll know that I have previously reviewed these books in separate videos, but I've rerecorded this as an overview episode instead. Check out my channel for more book reviews with your favourite influencers!
ARGO: I absolutely adored this rendition of Jason gathering his Argonauts to go and retrieve the Golden Fleece.
Knowles did a wonderful job of introducing a new audience to Jason: a naive young man who takes on a quest to sail across the world in a bid to save his father's life. We see him gather his Argonauts to make the journey with him, we follow him to the islands of Lemnos and Samothrace, and - of course - we walk alongside him as he enters the lands of Colchis. Not only does the reader get to see Jason's physical trek across the seas, but we also get to see him mature into the man his Argonauts need him to be.
Unsurprisingly, my favourite moments of this book were the ones which shed light on either Heracles, Hypsipyle, or Medea. Heracles' braun and arrogance added a layer of humour to the story I thoroughly enjoyed to the point where I wasn't able to put the book down whenever he appeared. With regards to Hypsipyle - this is a character I've been patiently waiting for someone to take on, and so I was thrilled to see her come to life on these pages and presented in a strong way. And of course, Medea, our wonderful and crazy sorceress, totally took centre stage in the last few chapters of the book. Medea was powerful and sultry and exhibited glimmers of her terrifying character on this leg of Jason's journey.
JASON: The second book in the Blades of Bronze series does not disappoint!
In this instalment, Mark Knowles takes his reader on Jason's journey home to Iolkos after he has successfully retrieved the Golden Fleece. The ancient source material surrounding the Argonautica's triumphant return to Greece is actually extremely limited, and so I enjoyed reading where Knowles' imagination took us on this ride. Given that the Blades of Bronze series discusses Jason's mythology in a more historical-fiction manner, I thought the book did a wonderful job of rooting this insane story in a more familiar world to that of the readers.

A HUGE thank you to Mr Fry for chatting with me and to his assistant for being so keen to plan this.
#TrojanWar #BookReview #GreekMythologyHistorian Honestly Reviews Stephen Frys Mythology BooksMoAn Inc.2024-01-18 | Unsurprisingly, Stephen Fry is perfect. I literally have nothing bad to say about him nor Mythos. What's wonderful about Fry's retellings is that every time he chooses a version of the ancient myth, he clarifies it by stating exactly which source he got it from, and why it's the best version for his collection. For that reason alone you simply cannot fault him. Yes there are differing versions of every single story Fry tells within these pages, but that fact he gives his readers references constantly throughout the narrative means that we can go back and check these tales in the original writings. And who knows? Maybe a newbie to mythology has seen those footnotes and decided to go buy their own copy of Hesiod or Homer - or even Ovid! - just to see what words Fry was building off of! What a wonderful thought.
So yeah, he's perfect. Amazing. Fantastic. I will pay good money for MYTHOS, HEROES, TROY and all his books surround greek mythology in the future.
