There will be two instruments created: Pitched and Percussive
If you don’t have an instrument or voice to record, feel free to record MIDI with one of our 1,000+ free sample libraries on Pianobook. Just be sure to credit the patch used in the file name. More on that later.
Step 1: Import the video or audio file into your DAW (both are identical).
Step 2: Record the notes C, D sharp, F sharp and A, following the instructions. If you have time to record more octaves, please do! I want this to be a full keyboard instrument. Just duplicate your track and repeat the process. If you’re recording a percussive layer, use these 4 notes as an opportunity to record round robins (multiple recordings of the same articulation).
Step 3: When you’re done, drag the attached Sync Plop file to the start position of the audio or video instruction file. Export your octaves, one pass at a time, with the sync plop at the beginning. Please DON’T include the audio instructions in your export! Your filenames should be in the convention Initials_Pitch / Percussive_Instrument or Pianobook library used.wav
Step 4: Zip up your audio files and send them to thrumming@mail.com by Tuesday 21st July 2022
I’ll share the instrument a few weeks after the closing date! Thanks and good luck!

I often spend evenings just writing little pieces like this, so I thought I'd capture it tonight, in this somewhat fly-on-the-wall way. Hope you enjoy!
All of the classic studio instruments in one, beautifully-crafted sample library. Featuring multisampled pianos, keys, synths, basses, guitars and drums, all recorded in great detail at Snap! Studios in London (home to the likes of Coldplay, Kate Bush, Michael Kiwanuka, Sampha, Ronnie Wood, Liam Gallagher, Floating Points and many more), we’ve focused on creating instruments that sound exceptional and work together right out of the box. Captured via the studio’s custom vintage 1970’s Neve 53 Series analogue recording console, and performed by esteemed players and producers who are actively in the studio and on stage with the likes of Jungle, Ed Sheeran, Frank Ocean, Mahalia, Everything Everything and Doja Cat, this is a go-to for producers and composers who want to create hit-ready instrumentals in the box.
Launching my new sample library Petrichor, released with Fracture Sounds! Come meet the players who recorded this beautiful project with me.
Petrichor is a soft woodwind textures library, formed of Low and High Wind Ensembles. Low Winds mixes Baritone Sax, Tenor Sax, Bass Clarinet and Bass Flute. High Winds mixes Tenor and Alto Sax, Clarinet in B flat, Alto and Concert flute.
We recorded an eclectic range of articulations designed to add warmth, and gentle ebb and flow to your scores, featuring a cutting edge new articulation called Smart Trills. This analyses the intervals in your chords and selects sporadic trills that follow your input.

It's a deep dive with over 80 sounds, over 200 presets, an A-B mixer and loads of fx that I can't quite explain. The video is a breakdown of a piece of music, and shines a light on a broader question about how to make your music more nostalgic.
In this video, I make a bit of a fool of myself, by trying to make a drum loop more interesting by adding sounds that I recorded with Ed Gill in Hyde Park. I don't think the result is brilliant, but I had fun easing myself back into making videos.

It's important to maintain a simple bass tone that cuts through a mix, using strong sub bass and gritty mid range - this will help your music translate on phone speakers / laptops etc.
This is a video walkthrough of my new sample library Soft String Textures, available now on Pianobook Artists.
Soft String Textures is the ultimate embodiment of the original Soft String Spurs concept. Featuring three of my all-time favourite string players, this collaboration captures bespoke performances and articulations that have been workshopped to deliver stunning realism and emotive depth to your music. Formed of solo violin, viola and cello, Soft String Textures leans heavily on the musicality of our sublime players Ellie Consta, Georgie Davis and Meera Raja. Together, we have come up with something that I am deeply proud of. Recorded in Studio B at Spitfire Audio HQ, this library is intimate and immediate. Captured at 96kHz by an 8-mic array, each player was recorded individually for fine control.
Alongside 5 core articulations, Soft String Textures also features 10 warps to add a hybrid element to your scores.
This is the Roland Boutique JU-06A — an update to the JU-06, which was an emulation of the iconic Roland Juno 60 from 1984, with all the familiar sounds that the original was famous for. The original Juno 60 and 106 didn’t have loads of features, but what they did they did really well. From the inbuilt arpeggiator, to filters, choruses and delay, this £350 Boutique recreation packs the sounds that we know and love into a tiny form-factor.
In this video, I interview Mike Ladouceur, a composer and educator teaching at the University of Cambridge and Royal College of Music. This conversation is about Storytelling in Film Music. Mike is full of words of wisdom for both beginner and experienced composers. Enjoy!

In this video, I compose a piece of music in real-time from start to finish in 40 minutes, using Spitfire Audio's Appassionata Strings, Chamber Strings, BBC Symphony Orchestra and Albion V Tundra sample libraries. From piano sketch to orchestration, mixing and mastering, I hope there will be something interesting for you to take away from this video!
In this video, I share some awesome sample libraries by Elementary Sounds. I also experiment with scoring a sketch that I think would really take well as a TV drama score!

I'm a full-time composer, producer and musician, so this is definitely an investment for me, but I hope you get some insights into this laptop and feel a little more certain about whether this computer is for you.
My chosen spec is: 14" M1 Max with 64GB Unified Memory and 2TB SSD. Generally, I'd recommend: 16" M1 Pro with 32GB Unified Memory and 2TB SSD - I think this will be enough for most people.

A couple of years ago, I recorded drums for a friend’s debut album at a small studio here in the UK. After we finished recording, I sampled the kit for some potential future warping and mangling, and it’s lived in a dusty Pro Tools session ever since – until now. I rescued the samples and recorded them onto a TDK Type II Chrome cassette, processing them on the way back into my DAW with a dbx160 stereo compressor. The result is a loud, gritty, in-your-face drum pack bursting with character. Featuring kick, snare, two toms, a crash and ride cymbal, this library has 3 dynamic layers and 3 round robins and is compatible with Kontakt 5 or later.
