(I notice a lot of other local folks have also suddenly seen squash bugs become a problem in their gardens, as well... is this a result of climate change? Introduced via a plant nursery? Who can say exactly why, but suddenly they're a problem...without natural predators.)
Here are 3 SIMPLE, ORGANIC ways I help reduce the squash bug pressure in my garden so I can continue to get abundant harvests of summer squash, winter squash, cucumbers, and melons in my permaculture garden.

You Don’t Have To Be. (2 Reasons to Avoid Zealotry)Parkrose Permaculture2023-07-13 | I want to take a few minutes to talk about how we actually get folks to engage in fighting against a consumer culture and embracing sustainable living movements like permaculture.
Yes, permaculture IS radical in a world that is all about consumption and exploitation. But that doesn't mean that being extreme in our viewpoints and pushing "all or nothing" mindsets will help folks want to engage with permaculture.
How can we make permaculture APPROACHABLE? How do we create an environment where folks feel welcome and encouraged to do what they can, instead of shaming folks for not doing "enough". How can we communicate the need for permaculture, while remembering that our critique is of systems of exploitation while uplifting and empowering individuals? ~~~~===Ways to support our work===~~~~ LIKE COMMENT SHARE AND SUBSCRIBE!

But the majority of humans live in urban spaces, where access to nature can be limited.
What does it mean to practice permaculture in the city when it comes to Zones 4 and 5? How do we as humans in the city conserve, protect, and enjoy our urban ecology? What does "Earth Care" look like here? Let's take a look at the Columbia Slough Watershed here in Portland as an example.

In fact, they can be a gift.
In permaculture we say, "Everything is a resource!" Weeds are no different - they can provide green living mulch that shades the soil and act as nurse plants to tender young starts. They can be pulled and used as brown mulch (pull n drop/chop n drop), where they will cover and protect the soil and slowly turn back into soil themselves, increasing fertility.
Knowing our weeds - and how best to use them - helps make our gardens more resilient, and our gardening less stressful.

They're not only a massive use of resources and gas guzzlers, they're literally killing us.
But this channel is about permaculture design. Do we NEED this hulking machines? Are they a symptom of something greater than our "need" to haul stuff? What would it look like if we designed around resilience instead of ego-flattery and corporate profit?
What if we addressed the root causes of why these trucks appeal to so many folks? What would our roads and society look like then? How many lives would be saved, and how much more resilient would our communities be?

But adversity breeds innovation. And moms are coming up with solutions: pooling resources to buy a home with friends.
And they’re finding more than just reduced housing costs and shared childcare. Mommunes and other shared housing solutions offer community - something we desperately need in our fractured, isolated society.

Living a sustainable life the best we can in the midst of a totally unsustainable culture requires intentionality. We have to carve out time for mindfulness. We must set aside time to engage in the arts and crafts we find meaningful. We have to be intentional about providing space for ourselves to recenter and recharge.
For me, that meant setting aside my chores, and spending some time sitting in the garden, enjoying the haven I have created - the flowers, the fragrance, the birdsong surrounding me - and working on my latest fiber project - spinning yarn from my poodles.

Apologies for uploading a day late!
I find that the permaculture principles come to mind in all areas of life, nature, and human culture. When we view the world with a permaculture lens, we see how those concepts play out in so many areas of life beyond the garden.
When I think of the hard work of parenting children, for example, I am reminded of the the concept of a closed system, and about how we want to obtain a yield in permaculture, and it helps me understand that I am investing in the future, and in yields I may not personally see, but that will come to fruition in a closed system, where the investment of my labor will yield a dividend for future generations and society a whole.

Guess We Aren’t So Green After AllParkrose Permaculture2023-05-19 | Folks asked for an update on the community effort to stop a polluting diesel freight warehouse from coming in 15 feet from housing and across the street from our schools.
Here’s how it’s going: Parkrose is a community worth fighting for. We dream of safety, livability, and prosperity for our community. We dream of resilience and connection. We won’t give up until City Council helps us make those dreams come true.
Multnomah County Board of Commissioners - our testimony will be uploaded to this channel (hopefully soon?) - also a note, 5 minutes before testimony began we were informed that testimony was cut from 3 min to 2 min, so I had to take an axe to a lot of what I wanted to say, but I hope it didn't fall on deaf ears: youtube.com/@MultCoBoard/videos

I'm swapping out those plants that have struggled in our hotter, dryer climate change summers, and am moving in more resilient pollinator plants.
Here's a look at how that process went for me. I'll be sure to update you as the season goes on!
Permaculture is about resilience and adaptability. So it's time to adapt and design for a more resilient front flower border with taught perennials that can handle hotter, drier conditions.

Is this the new Climate Change "normal" for us?
But this is a channel about permaculture design: so how do we design our gardens and communities for a warming climate? The "Plant Only Natives" crowd has made great headway in normalizing native plant landscaping...but can natives cut it in a climate to which they are not adapted? Can we make our gardens more resilient by looking BEYOND natives?

Plants that were well-suited to my sunny bed up by the street are now suffering in our increasingly warming weather.

Do We Have Them? Should We Have Them?Parkrose Permaculture2023-05-08 | A while back, I had a conversation with another woman in permaculture who expressed her frustration at the "guru-ification" of a prominent figure in the movement.
So, what do y'all think? Do we have gurus in permaculture? SHOULD we have them? What insight can we gain from permaculture principles about whether it's a good idea to have gurus in permaculture.
Guru: gu-ru ˈgü-(ˌ)rü, (n) 1. a spiritual teacher or guide 2. an expert in a specific area who gives advice ^^^ HOWEVER, in common usage, there is a negative connotation and the understanding that gurus can have an almost cult-leader like status, viewed as having an elevated consciousness or understanding of a topic, adored by followers, and resistant to criticism. It is this understanding of the term I am using in this video.
Guru Syndrome can include: -"the group’s unconditional worship of their leader and their exclusivist attitude" -"the belief [by members or the leader themself] that the leader can do no wrong" -elevating leaders and their teachings to a faultless or "inspired" status - shutting down criticism of the leader, their writings. Silencing dissent. -belief that a leader is "spiritually awakened, when in fact they are psychologically damaged" -marginalizing the perspectives and views besides those of the leader -the need for the leader to have disciples and their attention/adoration -"mindless devotion" by pupils and a mob mentality for shutting down valid critiques of the leader psychologytoday.com/us/blog/out-the-darkness/201904/the-guru-syndrome

However, bees don't visit these strange little maroon-colored flowers...flies do! And I tend to have a shortage of flies in my garden this early in the year, so in order to get good fruit-set, I need to pollinate them by hand, with a paintbrush.

Today's video is about sustainable fashion, the value of handwork, and Elizabeth Zimmermann!!
Elizabeth Zimmermann was an icon in the Knitting World. Her patterns are clever, elegant, and practical. For many years, I've wanted to make the Butterfly Vest. With doctor's orders to rest and take it easy, the time seemed right to dig into my stash and make this deceptively simply and comfortable garment.
