Dolly Parton, the country music icon whose soaring vibrato, poignant songwriting and sparkling costumes helped propel her from a log cabin in the Tennessee mountains to international stardom, has died. She was 80.

She wrote hundreds of songs, including classics such as "Jolene," "Coat of Many Colors" and "I Will Always Love You." Her music generated more than 100 million records sold worldwide and more than 1 billion online streams.
Parton was also a generous philanthropist and successful businesswoman whose ventures included a theme park in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains near her birthplace. She was a rare celebrity whose appeal transcended generations, geography and politics.
