During the American Revolutionary War, John Adams made a perilous voyage across the Atlantic onboard USS Boston in 1778, to help secure French support for the American cause. Despite the constant threat of British warships and violent Atlantic storms, Adams joined fellow diplomats, including Benjamin Franklin and Arthur Lee, in strengthening the alliance between the United States and France.
While John Adams was aboard the Continental frigate, Boston encountered and captured a British armed vessel, often identified as the Martha. Adams was not a naval officer, but he witnessed the action firsthand and was reportedly eager enough that he took up a musket before being told to stay below for safety.
