After these two's puppy love phase was over, Ed wasn't super happy with how this relationship was going (it was kind of imbalanced with him always giving up more for Em's sake. It wasn't intentional on her part but still) and he asked her to break it off, at least for a bit so they can both rethink things. But Em didn't take this super well and because of this, Ed decided to stay together with her. This imbalance in their dynamic just grew as they got older, especially with Ed staying together with Em just so she's happy.
