Hello! In this video I will talk about color variability and special mode for external LUT called Masked Alt.I highly recommend that you watch Oleg Sharonov’s video on color variability before watching this lesson, so that you better understand what will be discussed. You can find a link to it in comments below the video. In short, the greater the color variability, the more different shades there will be in the photograph at the same level of brightness, and the less variability, the less shades will be. Let me remind you the easiest way to control variability: you can adjust it with white balance. The most important thing about it is that it affects differently cold and warm shades. An increase in color temperature reduces variability for warm tones to which a skin color belongs. I will show this with an example. Skin tones became even after increasing white balance, that is, skin variability decreased. It only benefits the skin; it gets evened out. On the contrary, variability of warm colors increases with a decrease of white balance. Reflexes from the sky, background, and clothing are more noticeable on the skin now. Skin color has become diverse. This is how white balance affects the variability of warm colors. Now let's pay attention to the background. It shows sea surf and, obviously, it belongs in cold shades. Decreasing white balance for cold shades results in less variability. That is, the background has become uniform blue. When I increase white balance, additional shades appear on the background, that is, its variability increases. What should I do if I need to reduce the color variability of both background and skin? I only add new shades to the background while evening the skin by color, and vice versa. For such cases, 3D LUT Creator has a special external LUT mode called Masked Alt. Let me show you how it works.Firstly, I will create a LUT that will make my image warm. The skin has uniform color now. I will compile this edit to external LUT and reset the settings. Here it is loaded and you can see that it makes the skin warmer. I turn it off for now. Now I’m going to lower white balance so that the variability of the sea decreases. Here's what happened. I turn on the external LUT and select Masked Alt mode. In normal mode, the mask adjusts the transition from the original image to the processed one. In Masked Alt mode, you can adjust the transition from one LUT to another. I’ll create such a mask and turn on the preview. So, my current edit affects the light areas of the mask, and the external LUT affects the black areas of the mask. Since I need to separate the effect on the cold and warm shades of the image, I will choose the mask based on image warmth. Here's what happened. I will turn on mask preview. The cold areas of the image are bright, they are affected by the current edit, which lowers the white balance and evens out the blue background. Warm areas that are now black are affected by the External LUT. As you remember, external LUT enhances white balance and makes skin warmer. You can adjust this grading to taste by changing the mask and LUT settings. Here is a photo before, here is after. It looks like I have increased saturation, although I only worked with a color temperature. Let me create a new version of edit and raise the saturation. The skin became not uniform; the sea also did not turn blue. Let's compare with what I have made. I have smooth skin and cold background. Let’s compare before/after side to side. In this version of edit I have increased the saturation. I’ll load another photo. Here is a photo before, here is after applying my grade! That's all! I hope everything is clear and well explained! If it’s not clear, write me in the comments under the video. Bye everyone!
