What is your default stance in an RPG: do you adhere to the letter of the rules , or the spirit of the rules? Can you do both?
I just had one of the most incredible gaming experiences, and it was because of an inventive use of the mechanics. But it didn't feel cheap, and it didn't feel fudged.
Jeff and I were in an epic, final session of a long running campaign -- it was the final fight with the final boss -- the stakes couldn't be higher, and it was TOUGH.
It was a 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons session, and the Dungeon Master (Jeremy Lilley of Erasmus Expeditions) did something simple but profound involving the Bardic Inspiration die, and a point of inspiration.
It changed the entire direction of the game, and the outcome was exactly what we needed for the fight-- BUT it did not follow the rules... or at least the letter of the rules.
You can hear Jeff tell the story of what happened at the beginning of this video, and then get some tips on how you can do these kinds of things in your game.
Overall, we think that when the moment is right, it's okay to allow players to use resources in ways that are unconventional, as long as the spirit of the rules AND of the story remain intact.
