Morse Morse and more Morse. Morse code despite not having filmed any Morse videos for a few years has been a mainstay interest of mine for the last 35 years with hardly a week not having gone by when I have not conversed in Morse code.
To anyone not familiar with "The Code" it sounds complex and difficult and for many it has remained an illusive skill difficult to master, for others especially those with a good grasp of rhythm and who are "Musical" it has been an easier proposition.
I have known highly intelligent people, Doctors and Professors who simply could not grasp it and yet others just ordinary folk who can learn it and learn it well but in all cases the only way to really master the code is just to practice it and spend time listening. There are no shortcuts, you have to put in the hours and I would add to this, put your pen or pencil away and learn to head read. This is especially true for those wanting to use Morse for Conversational purposes aka The Rag chew.
To myself and Rich it has become a second language and we regularly operate at far higher speeds upto 40 wpm and on the odd occasion touching 60 wpm using electronic paddles. I hasten to add at the higher speeds QSD (errors) do creep in but as we are using Morse for conversation in our native tongue, despite the errors understanding isn't a problem.
Quick fact
Although Samuel Morse is accredited as the inventor of The Morse code, his code was practically unusable and was discontinued in favour of the code we now use which was largely the invention of Alfred Vail.
AV made the code a language that could be read by anyone. Letters which occurred frequently like "E" were assigned a dot, I is 2 dots, S 3 dots
