Abstract: For resource-limited fisheries conservation groups, data collection is a time consuming, expensive endeavor that can’t always deliver the required results within useful timeframes. Additionally, differing modes of data collection and analyses conducted by multiple groups with similar goals results in disparate knowledge gains. However, the opportunity for streamlining data pipelines and collaboration exists, and Shiny has been a vital tool for building comprehensive solutions that deliver fisheries information to a variety of stakeholders in dynamic and easily understandable ways.
At Barefoot Ocean, our mission is to empower individuals, small-scale fishing communities, and local governmental and non-governmental organizations with the formidable power of science and data. To achieve this, we leverage the flexibility of Shiny to create user-friendly applications that consolidate data streams and standardize analyses, putting fishing communities and resource managers at the center of their data stories. Utilizing Shiny has mitigated the technical barriers to data access, processing and visualization. By providing near-time data, local organizations can now focus on using this information to engage communities and empower them to understand how their livelihoods are changing.
Shiny has also become a means for demonstrating the power of open science. After organizations saw their fisheries data come alive in Shiny, interest grew in using this as a shared platform by aggregating data to inform policy and management decisions at a variety of scales. An initial analysis idea can be turned into a powerful insight, relevant to all, instead of each organization individually having separate ‘eureka’ moments.
