Global demand for data scientist is expected to increase by 28% by 2020. Through the US Government’s Data Collaboratives for Local Impact project, we invested in building skills needed to leverage the data revolution in order to drive effective development and bring about social impact. This session would share lessons learned from the project about empowering individuals and communities in Africa (mostly women and youth) with data skills to solve health, education, gender inequality and economic growth challenges. Through a systems-approach to unlock the power of data we have been able to advance country leadership in improving lives, and to build the skills that youth need to access opportunities within the global digital economy. We use data to engage people in unique ways—fashion shows, data murals and music videos. This session would touch upon how data is being used for social good and can create positive impact through innovation challenges, trainings and sub-national work that all revolves around capturing, using and communicating data.
