Bear Grylls, Led Stroud Survivorman, Dave and Cody from Dual Survival and other TV survival shows very often had to jump into water to cross rivers creeks waterways. I never recommend this unless it's a dire emergency. Being wet or washed downstream is a dire emergency itself in my opinion. Therefore for the average hiker camper I suggest carrying a pack raft. Most don't like carrying the extra weight in their pack but, use it as a bed in your shelter and that multi use easily justifies the weight.
