I wanted to test if my small bench lathe can use a 6mm wide HSS parting blade and initial tests indicate that it is indeed doable. It's a Paramount Browns FI-550 lathe with a modified 600w 3-phase motor and pulley reduction from 1400rpm to 120 rpm.
It is counter intuitive but the larger parting blade is more rigid, forgiving as long as the motor can provide enough torque. I ditched the quick change tool post and just used step clamps to hold the blade down to the solid tool post mount.
