Things to keep in mind if your spouse passes away -

️⃣ The Social Security Cliff: When a spouse passes, the smaller of the two monthly checks disappears. If you’re relying on both to pay the bills, that is an immediate and permanent cut to your household income.

️⃣ The "Widow’s Penalty": This is the tax trap no one talks about. Your income may only drop slightly, but your tax status changes from Married Filing Jointly to Single. You’ll likely pay a higher tax rate on nearly the same income, shrinking your take-home pay.

️⃣ Pension Survivor Benefits: Did you choose a survivor benefit or a "Life Only" payout? Choosing the wrong option on day one of retirement could leave a surviving spouse with zero pension income. You need to verify this today.

️⃣ Asset Access & Logistics: If one spouse "handles the money," the survivor can be left in the dark. You need to ensure they know exactly where the money is kept and have the passwords to access it so they aren't fighting with a computer during a period of grief.

️⃣ The Fixed Cost Myth: Many assume expenses drop by half. They don't. Property taxes, home insurance, and utility bills stay the same whether there are two people in the house or one.
