Speed Graphic Film and Video | USAF Lockheed Constellation, 1960 @SpeedGraphicFilmVideo | Uploaded October 2020 | Updated October 2024, 17 hours ago.
I think the Lockheed Constellation was one of the most graceful-looking airliners ever built. The "Connie" seen here was built for the United States Air Force's Military Air Transport Service (MATS) in 1949. Retired in 1967, she went through various owners and careers before being sold to a Dutch group. She is now at the Lutchvaart Museum Aviodrome in Lelystad in the livery of KLM Royal Dutch Airways.
This film comes from a reel of unidentified stock footage at the National Archives, but I believe that it was taken in late 1960 when Prince Abdul Rahman of the Federation of Malaya visited the U.S. For the soundtrack, I chose the biggest hit of 1960, the Theme from Summer Place. The fact that Percy Faith's recording was exactly the right length sealed the deal.
The scenes from 0:34 to 0:53 show New York City from the air. I can't identify any of the other locations.
