The U.S. wine industry is facing one of its most difficult periods in decades as wine sales fall to their lowest level in 20 years and producers struggle with declining demand.

U.S. wine sales fell below 300 million cases last year, down from a peak of 344 million just five years earlier, according to Impact Databank. Worldwide wine consumption also fell another 2.7%, according to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine.

Experts say one of the biggest factors is a generational shift in alcohol consumption. Longtime wine drinkers are aging, while younger consumers are drinking less alcohol amid changing health and lifestyle preferences.

The drop in demand has left wineries with excess supply, prompting some growers to remove productive vineyards. But there's a silver lining for consumers: retailers are offering steep discounts on bottles as wineries try to clear inventory.
