It's the size of an airliner, it flies itself to the edge of space, and it can map an entire country in a single day — yet it carries no weapons at all. This is the Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk, America's largest drone, and in this video we take it apart piece by piece to explain exactly how it works.
We start with the wing — a hundred and thirty-one feet of it, wider than a Boeing 737, built more like a sailplane than a jet, and the real reason this aircraft can stay airborne for thirty-four hours straight. Then we climb into its belly to meet "the eye": synthetic aperture radar that sees through clouds and darkness, moving-target radar that tags every vehicle below, and the two very different versions of this drone — the multi-sensor "Swiss Army knife" and the pure radar specialist. Next, the strangest part of all: there is no cockpit and no control stick. The Global Hawk takes off, flies, and lands itself, commanded by an operator with a keyboard and a mouse who may be sitting on the far side of the planet. Finally, we head to sixty thousand feet to explain the physics of the edge of space, the business-jet engine that sips fuel up there, and the deliberate, high-stakes trade that lets an unarmed aircraft survive over hostile ground.
No history lecture. No war stories. Just the machine, explained the way you always wanted someone to explain it.
