It felt more like 1962 than 2026 in Clewiston, Florida, this January, when U.S. Sugar No. 148 was returned to its vintage sugar-hauling appearance for a two-day photo charter.
In service on the Sugar Express since 2020, this event marked the 1920-built locomotive's third photo charter. It was charged with sugar cane cars one day and a matching passenger train the next, and as an added bonus for steam fans, the 148 was specially equipped with the hooter whistle from the legendary Norfolk & Western No. 1218. Thanks to the crews of U.S. Sugar and FMW Solutions, the 148 gave a thrilling performance through the cane fields at speeds up to 40 mph.

Norfolk & Western 4-8-4 611 operates on the Strasburg Rail Road for one more day in May 2023. This 1950-built J-class locomotive has taken residence at Strasburg for two years, and would return to Virginia just days later.
Operated on this day as well is Norfolk & Western 4-8-0 475, a 1906-built M-class locomotive. The 475 has been part of the Strasburg steam roster since 1993.
