The Treasury Department is ramping up a buyback program for longer-dated securities to rein-in long-term borrowing costs from multi-year highs.

The rise in US debt is expected to continue, with interest costs now the third-largest part of the budget, and the government getting closer to the statutory debt ceiling of $41.1 trillion.
