The national debt has surged past $40 trillion, and budget experts say lawmakers are running out of easy ways to slow its growth without making politically difficult choices on taxes and spending.
The United States reached the $40 trillion mark after adding another $1 trillion in just five months, moving from $39 trillion to $40 trillion.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called the figure significant but expressed optimism.
“The 40 trillion is a big number. It is smaller when we look at the publicly traded amount because our Social Security funds and other government entities hold a substantial amount. And what we're going to do, we're going to have to grow our way out of this,” Bessent said.
