When U.S. Army soldiers train alongside NATO allies at the Grafenwoehr Training Area (GTA) in Bavaria, Germany, they frequently participate in cross-qualification events. One of the most common and prestigious of these events is earning the Schützenschnur, the German Armed Forces Badge for Weapons Proficiency.

To earn this decoration, American soldiers must step away from their standard-issue M4 carbines and M17 pistols to master the primary service weapons of the German Bundeswehr: the Heckler & Koch G36 rifle and the P8 pistol.
