Have you seen the experience with a bottle of water and a ping pong ball? The ping pong ball keeps the water in the bottle. Why doesn't the water come out of the bottle?
When we put the ball on the top of the bottle, it pushes all the extra water out of it. When we turn the bottle upside down, all the water stays inside. The pressure of the water inside the bottle is balanced by the atmospheric air pressure on the ball, which is kind of stuck to the neck of the bottle. Surface tension of water helps it do this. The water molecules are attracted to each other, closing the small opening between the ball and the neck of the bottle.
