Set on a desolate, sinking island in Bangladesh, Tahmima Anam’s latest Uprising follows a group of sex workers who resist their fate of servitude. Inspired by a real-life floating brothel, this unflinching drama is told through the collective voices of children. In conversation with Bee Rowlatt, Anam reveals the true stories and silent revolutions of many.
Tahmima Anam is the author of the Bengal trilogy and a recipient of the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best First Book and the O. Henry Award. She is a Granta Best of Young British Novelist and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, she trained as an anthropologist at Harvard University and now lives in London.
Bee Rowlatt is a writer whose books include One Woman Crime Wave, In Search of Mary (winner of the Society of Authors’ K Blundell Trust Award), and the best-selling Talking About Jane Austen in Baghdad. She was one of the main presenters of the BBC docuseries Austen: Rise of a Genius. She programmes cultural events at the British Library and is a former broadcast journalist for the BBC World Service. She is Chair and founder of the Wollstonecraft Society and was recently awarded an MBE for services to women’s rights.
