Taco Bell is now confirming that lettuce—not the tacos themselves—is at the center of a federal investigation into a Cyclospora outbreak that has sickened thousands.

The CDC says iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell restaurants in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia may be linked to the parasite. Health officials are urging customers in those states to avoid eating the lettuce while the investigation continues.

According to reports, investigators are also looking into a possible connection to supplier Taylor Farms, which has announced it is voluntarily removing iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the U.S. market. Officials say it’s still possible other businesses could also be linked to the outbreak.

Health experts recommend buying whole heads of lettuce instead of pre-cut or pre-washed packaged lettuce until more is known.
