(Updated) After slowing down the video and zooming in (cropping) for a closer look, I suspected the “animal” in this video is an owl. Boy, was I wrong.
Shortly after I published this video here on YouTube, my 10-year-old revealed the answer: The so-called “critter” is actually a handset for an Oculus Quest 2 (virtual reality hardware). My 13-year-old son had received the Oculus Quest 2 as a Christmas gift days earlier, and my 10-year-old son had taken it outside onto our deck to play a VR game.
So, to be clear, what we’re seeing in this video is a hand controller held by my 10-year-old son as he plays a virtual reality game while wearing an Oculus Quest 2 headset on our deck at night in sub-freezing temperatures. Later, my 13-yearold son would express hi disapproval that his brother had taken the Oculus outside.
Needless to say, after solving this mystery on New Year’s Eve, there were several hearty chuckles in my household throughout the evening. I’m sure we’ll be talking about this one for years.
As I wrote on Twitter about this episode, I’m not deleting the video or my tweets about it. I’m not above a bit of humor at my expense.
More importantly, this might be considered an example of how something “unexplained“ can lead to inaccurate conclusions due to our biases, zeal, imagination and/or other factors.
