I absolutely love the movie and it's definitely one of my favorite animated movies ever, so a musical adaptation felt very natural! So, here's the gist for this particular song:
"Promises" takes place between Ellie's funeral and the moment Carl and the house go up into the sky. The song is essentially Carl singing to Ellie (as I noticed he talked a lot to her "in spirit" throughout the movie) after he finds their Adventure Book. He remembers Paradise Falls and everything they planned to do there, so he decides to keep true to their promise to go there! The song then goes into the moment that the house takes off (the quote Andrew says is taken directly from the movie)!
Now, obviously, this song takes a few liberties and isn't meant to be a shot-for-shot recreation of the movie, so just bear that in mind! This is my interpretation of how a stage version of the show might go! And of course, in a real musical, Carl would be portrayed by a much older actor, but Andrew is literally iconic and I have wanted to work with him for a long long time, and this was the perfect opportunity to do so!
