On March 4, President emerita Ruth J. Simmons and Ginetta E.B. Candelario ’90, professor and editor of the intersectional feminist journal Meridians, discussed Simmons’ new memoir, ”Up Home: One Girl’s Journey.“ The memoir describes how Simmons, the daughter of sharecroppers, became the first Black president of Smith and subsequently the first Black president of an Ivy League university. Simmons also played a central role in founding Meridians at Smith to showcase the voices of women of color.
