While digitalisation of documents and electronic processing increasingly takes the place of paper in many City Councils in Brazil, both media coexist, and many bills make their way through the offices, committees and plenary rooms on trolleys pushed by civil servants. The video-installation plays with the routine of one of these public artifacts. As it is filled and emptied throughout the day the trolley creates a simple rhythm among the complex ritual it serves. The images were made in São Paulo City Hall Municipal Archive. The artists acknowledge the civil servants Ubirajara Prestes and Pedro Campos. Exhibit created by Telma Hoyler and Amir Massoumian.
Living Democracy runs at the SOAS Brunei Gallery until the 16th of March 2024. Find out more at soas.ac.uk/about/event/living-democracy
