In the lightweight division, pre-fame Tszyu loses the semi-finals (17-14) of the 1989 World Amateur Boxing Championships in his home country to eventual silver medalist Andreas Zulow, a brilliant German fighter from the Eastern side of the Berlin Wall.
Zulow was the reigning Olympic Gold medalist from the 1988 game in Seoul. Tszyu avenged this loss in the 1991 European championships, where he took gold in the light welterweight division at the expense of Zulow.
The German never turned professional but Tszyu went on to make his name as a great light welterweight in the pro ranks.
