Just a quick tip and working example video to show the effect in a little more detail as requested.
Again, the general advice is to not use this for situations where you are working from far going to close up, For a mountain this would work from far to mid-range, then you switch to an actual modelled Lava flow or whatever.
The only reasons for this are the 8bit maps (you can try 16 and see) and the fact that to get the detail down to the pixel level you want for a huge mountain would be somewhat expensive. :) However for cinematics, or smaller sections of landscape this would be fine, ie. hills, cave walls, etc.
