5th-century writer Cassiodorus thought it meant "bearded countryside dweller" (barba + rus), but he was wrong.
It actually comes from the Greek barbaros, an onomatopoetic word meant to mimic the blah blah sound Greeks thought they heard when foreigners spoke.
