A viral Twitter/X post from former VTuber Circuit has sparked another debate about the state of the VTuber community after he uploaded a video announcing that he was quitting VTubing and explaining the reasons behind his decision. In this video, I, go through Circuit’s announcement and examine his complaints about VTuber culture, content creation, and the people surrounding the space. But as I work through his arguments, one question keeps coming up: are any of these problems actually unique to VTubing? Many of the issues he describes seem like the same problems creators encounter throughout Twitch, YouTube, social media, and online entertainment in general.
I also challenge the popular idea that there is one unified “VTuber community” in the first place. VTubing has grown into an enormous collection of independent creators, corporate talents, artists, streamers, commentators, and completely different fandoms with very little connecting all of them besides the use of virtual avatars. So when someone announces that they're “leaving the VTuber community,” what does that actually mean? I discuss why treating millions of unrelated creators and viewers as one community can create unrealistic expectations and why having negative experiences with certain corners of VTubing doesn't necessarily represent the entire medium.
Finally, I question whether Circuit’s dramatic departure is partially about generating attention at a time when abandoning the traditional VTuber identity has become a major discussion. Bao recently generated plenty of attention around revealing her real-life appearance and increasingly incorporating her IRL identity into her content, raising similar questions about what it even means to “quit” being a VTuber. Is Circuit genuinely walking away from VTubing, simply changing the way he creates content, or is declaring that you're “quitting the VTuber community” the perfect way to make sure everyone talks about you on the way out?
