The LUPOE (Leeds University Ported Optical Engine) engine is unique and was designed in-house for research into fuel combustion and associated ignition / auto ignition of fuel mixtures. Based on a Lister diesel crankcase, it has a ported cylinder liner to allow it to operate as a two-stroke spark-ignition engine. Seen here burning an Iso Octane mixture. It is continuously motored by the electric dynamometer, and fires at intervals of 5 seconds or so, not continuously.
After the engine fires, it fires again on the next stroke, this is auto-ignition which is being initiated by the residual heat of combustion, not by the spark plug.
