University of Arizona Hosts Hopi Recognition Game and Honors Judge Diane Humetewa

The Hopi Recognition Game at the University of Arizona celebrated the enduring relationship between the Hopi Tribe and the university during the football matchup against Weber State. The event featured traditional songs, language, and ceremonies that highlighted Hopi culture, humility, and resilience.
That same weekend, Honorable Judge Diane Humetewa, the first Native American woman federal judge, was inducted into the university’s Women’s Plaza of Honor, joining other pioneering women in law and public service.
Hopi teachings on nature were reflected when rain and lightning briefly delayed the game, embraced by the community as a sacred blessing essential to life.
The recognition game and related events reaffirmed the strong partnership between the Hopi Tribe and the University of Arizona.
