![history and culture of the Makah people, a native American people from Washington
Dive deep into the powerful story of the Makah Nation, the People of the Cape, an ancient seafaring tribe from the rugged coast of Washington State. This documentary explores the rich history, enduring culture, and the profound connection the Makah have with the sea.
For thousands of years, the Makah have thrived at the most northwestern point of the contiguous United States, with a culture deeply intertwined with the Pacific Ocean. We explore their incredible past, including the discovery of the Ozette Indian Village—an archaeological site often called Americas Pompeii—where a 500-year-old village was perfectly preserved by a mudslide, offering an unprecedented look into their pre-contact way of life.
At the heart of the Makah identity is their tradition of whaling. We examine the 1855 Treaty of Neah Bay, a unique document that explicitly secured the Makahs right to hunt whales, a practice central to their spiritual and cultural life. This video unpacks the complex and often controversial modern story of the Makah whale hunt, from the 70-year hiatus to the celebrated 1999 hunt and the ongoing legal and ethical debates that surround it today.
Join us as we explore the resilience of the Makah people, their fight to preserve ancient traditions in a modern world, and the unbreakable bond between a people and the ocean that sustains them.

![History of The Chimacum People: A Forgotten Native American Tribe
The place is the Chimacum Valley, located in rural Jefferson County on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state. It is a landscape shaped by forested ridges, agricultural valleys, and the flowing arms of a creek that empties into Port Townsend Bay. For millennia, this region was the homeland of a people who called themselves the Chemakum.
Their society was deeply connected to the marine environment, relying on the abundant resources of the land and sea for their survival and cultural identity. They lived in a stockaded village built along Chimacum Creek, a site known for its once-fertile camas prairies, sacred sites, and a rich population of beaver, elk, and deer. To understand the history of the Chemakum is to understand a history that is as old as the landscape itself, a complex tapestry woven from a long lineage of dwelling and travel that spans at least 14,000 years.

![History of The Atsugewi People: Guardians of Californias Forests,Native Americans
In the shadow of Mount Shasta, where volcanic peaks meet ancient forests, lies a land etched with the story of a people. This is the ancestral homeland of the Atsugewi, a story written in the flow of the Pit River and the rustle of pine and juniper trees. For millennia, they lived as two peoples, yet one nation, their identity shaped by the very earth beneath their feet. In the dense woods of the Hat Creek drainage were the Atsugé—the pine-tree people. To the east, in the arid plains of Dixie Valley, lived the Apwaruge—the juniper-tree people. Though separated by landscape, they were bound by a common language, a shared culture, and a deep, intricate knowledge of this world. This is their story—a story of industrious life, of catastrophic loss, and of a spirit that refuses to be extinguished.

This is the Eastern Shore of Virginia. A sliver of land suspended between the vast Atlantic and the Chesapeake Bay. It is a place of quiet beauty, a place that feels set apart. Its oldest name, given by its first inhabitants, tells you everything you need to know: Accawmacke—the land beyond the waters, the other-side-of-water place.
For centuries, this land was home to the Accomac people. Their story is written in the names of its counties and its creeks. But the people themselves have seemingly vanished. What happened to the people from the other side of the water?
