Well this is a bit different from my usual uploads.
Between June 2nd and June 5th, I had the honors of chasing Union Pacific’s big Coast To Coast 250 tour with none other than Union Pacific 4014 powering the train from Cedar Rapids, IA to Fort Wayne, IN. Making it a very historical occasion given this is the first time ever that a Big Boy has gone east under its own steam. So for this I wanted to do something different.
In this video you will see coverage of my chase from Bertram, IA to West Chicago, IL on the 2nd, their display day in West Chicago on the 3rd. The short chase from Glen Ellyn to Dolton, IL on the 4th, before the big day on the 5th from Calumet City, IL to Fort Wayne, IN. I also wanted to edit this video a little different than what I usually do and I might stick with this format for bigger videos like this in the future. In addition to Big Boy you’ll see other trains passing by from UP, Metra, BNSF, IHB, CSX, and of course Norfolk Southern so watch out for those as well. In addition you’ll see 4014 handle two different consists, one with just the Big Boy and the standard UP consist and UP 1776, and then on the fifth the consist gets spiced up with the addition of NS 1776 “The Bell,” as well as three of NS’ OCS cars and private car, “Marco Polo” which was used by FDR.
I also wanted to say that the reason I wanted to make this video special is because of my late Grandma who passed away in March earlier this year. She always loved hearing about all my railfan adventures and seeing all the pictures and videos I took. She was a lovely woman who lived a great life at 99 years old, just shy of her 100th. So grandma this video is for you. And I hope you all enjoy the sights of Big Boy as she thunders east for the 250th. Enjoy!
