On Thursday, July 16th, we made our way out east to Fort Wayne, Indiana to see the one and only Union Pacific 4014 make her West towards Chicago on her way home from her extended stay in Pennsylvania as apart of the big Coast To Coast 250 tour. During this time we managed to see the massive articulated pass through the Indiana countryside and into the more industrial Southeastern side of Chicago. What made this run unique is that it included not one, not two, but five diesels "assisting" the big 4-8-8-4, including UP 1616 and 1776, as well as all three of NS' 250 Units, the Bell, Lady Liberty, and Freedom, which made it even more of an interesting sight as it felt like something one would joke about. As a little bonus, after we had gotten done chasing 4014 to South Holland, we made our way to Peotone, IL to catch CN Z194 with their pair of 250 units leading the way. A nice way to close out the day.
Today, Friday the 17th, we made our way back out to catch 4014 on her way out of Chicago to head towards her next stop, which was in Bloomington, IL. Starting off in Blue Island where we caught two trains before 4014 and her train showed, we then made our way down South along UP's Joliet Sub with the intention of going all the way to Bloomington, but due to the speed she was going at and the fact that road construction was happening, it didn't work out. But with the shots I had gotten, I was satisfied with my round of 4014 this year.
This was surely an amazing excursion and while I wished I had gotten to see more of her out east like in Pennsylvania or New York, seeing 4014 in new territory with wacky consists surely was a treat. Big thanks to Ed Dickens, the UP Steam Crew, UP, and NS for making this excursion possible. Til next time, 4014! Enjoy!
