A new UniFi Travel Router

has leaked through regulatory filings, but this isn’t the WiFi 7 upgrade you might expect. The new UniFi Travel Router Long-Range (UTR-LR) appears to focus almost entirely on stronger antennas and better wireless coverage.
In this quick video, I go through what’s known about the UTR-LR, how it differs from the existing $79 UniFi Travel Router, why the enclosure is getting thicker, the expected 2.4GHz output, and what the improved antenna could mean for real-world coverage.
The leaked information indicates that the basic formula remains familiar: dual-band WiFi, 2x2 MIMO, 2 Ethernet ports, USB-C power, OpenVPN, WireGuard and UniFi management. The big change is the antenna system, with the new Long-Range version potentially offering substantially greater coverage.
I also look at why UniFi may have prioritised range and power efficiency rather than moving the travel router to WiFi 6 or WiFi 7, plus how this type of router can be used with hotel WiFi, guest networks and VPN connections back to your home or office.
As this product has not yet received a full retail announcement, final pricing, availability and specifications could still differ.
