Unicorn Hybrid Black Demonstration - Hackathon during IEEE SMC 2025
What does it take to build a real-time Brain-Computer Interface application? During the BR41N.IO Hackathon, participants received a hands-on introduction to the Unicorn Hybrid Black EEG headset, learning how to acquire EEG data, evaluate signal quality, process brain signals, and build Brain-Computer Interface applications using the complete Unicorn ecosystem.
The Unicorn Hybrid Black is an 8-channel EEG headset designed for Brain-Computer Interface research, cognitive neuroscience, neurofeedback, ERP experiments, and real-time EEG applications. The system combines active hybrid electrode technology, raw EEG data access, Bluetooth connectivity, and a complete software ecosystem including the Unicorn Suite, Python API, Unity SDK, Lab Streaming Layer (LSL), UDP interfaces, Simulink integration, and ready-to-use BCI development tools.
During the workshop, participants learned how to set up EEG recordings, monitor signal quality in real time, use dry and gel-based electrodes, perform artifact reduction, stream EEG data through LSL and UDP, calculate EEG bandpower features, and integrate brain signals into custom applications. The Unicorn Suite provides tools for recording, visualization, real-time signal processing, networking, neurofeedback, Brain-Computer Interface development, and EEG application prototyping.
A major focus of the session was demonstrating how quickly developers can move from EEG acquisition to working applications. Rather than spending valuable time implementing signal processing pipelines, feature extraction methods, classifiers, or communication interfaces from scratch, developers can use the Unicorn ecosystem to focus directly on application development, game design, machine learning, robotics, virtual reality, assistive technologies, and Brain-Computer Interface innovation.
The workshop also showcased real-time EEG applications including ERP-based games, visual evoked potential paradigms, neurofeedback, cognitive state monitoring, alpha power analysis, and custom Unity-based Brain-Computer Interface applications. Participants explored how EEG data can be streamed, analyzed, classified, and integrated into interactive software using Python, Unity, MATLAB, Simulink, and open communication protocols.
This session demonstrates why the Unicorn Hybrid Black is widely used for Brain-Computer Interface research, ERP studies, cognitive neuroscience, neurofeedback, EEG game development, machine learning, human-computer interaction, and rapid neurotechnology prototyping. By providing high-quality EEG acquisition, real-time processing tools, raw EEG data access, open APIs, Unity integration, Python support, and a complete software ecosystem, the platform enables researchers, students, startups, and developers to transform ideas into working EEG applications within hours.
BR41N.IO Hackathon projects repeatedly show that teams can build Brain-Computer Interfaces, EEG-controlled games, neurofeedback systems, machine learning applications, robotics projects, assistive technologies, and real-time neuroscience applications within just 24 hours using the Unicorn Hybrid Black platform.
