🕯️ Unholy Night: The Darkness Hunter (SNES) – A Dark Fighter Rises from the Grave 🩸🕹️
Released in 2017 — long after the SNES was considered a relic of the past — Unholy Night: The Darkness Hunter is a homebrew fighting game developed by former King of Fighters and Samurai Shodown devs. That alone makes it worth a look. But the real surprise? It's an actual physical release for the SNES — complete with cartridge, box, and manual — making it a rare modern effort to breathe new life into 16-bit hardware.
💀 What is Unholy Night all about?
It’s a 1v1 gothic-themed 2D fighter, where supernatural warriors and hunters clash in a grim world of vampires, cursed knights, and demonic power. With its roots in the golden age of arcade fighters, the game draws heavy influence from SNK’s 90s brawlers, but filtered through the SNES’s more limited hardware.
🎮 Highlights:
Six playable characters, each with their own dark backstory and flashy special moves
Classic charge and motion inputs, just like in Street Fighter or KOF
Super meter system that lets you unleash devastating ultra attacks
Atmospheric pixel art with gothic stages and moody color palettes
Fast-paced, combo-heavy gameplay that pushes the SNES to its limit
A haunting synth-heavy soundtrack that fits the brooding tone
Unholy Night plays surprisingly smoothly and brings a gritty, arcade-style fighting experience to a console that never saw much action in the genre. It’s clearly made by fighting game veterans, even if the hardware holds it back in some areas.
🧛 But it’s not perfect:
Only six characters limits variety and long-term replay value
AI difficulty spikes erratically
Lacks polish in animations and effects compared to arcade contemporaries
Weak story mode and no unlockables
Still, as a homebrew passion project, Unholy Night is a fascinating achievement — and a love letter to dark fantasy and classic fighting games. It's a must-try for SNES collectors and fans of obscure fighters looking for something different on 16-bit.
