かつてガスターが発見した「ケツイ」という物質を、その友人サンズが研究し実用化に成功しました。しかし、アズゴア王はそれを軍事利用しようと企みます。王はサンズを騙して兵器を量産させ、自らサンズの研究室を壊して「人間の仕業」と見せかけ、人間に戦争を仕掛けました。技術で勝るモンスターは人間を勝利し、奴隷のように扱って繁栄を極めます。自分の研究が戦争に使われたことを後悔したサンズは、40年もの間、密かに人間に食糧や技術を支援し続けました。やがてサンズと人間は反旗を翻し、二度目の戦争が勃発。新型兵器でモンスターを圧倒し、サンズ自らの手でアズゴア王を討ち取りました。戦いの末、モンスターは地下に封印されます。そして時が経ち、一人の少女がその地下世界へと落ちることから、物語が始まります。

Once upon a time, a researcher named Gaster discovered a substance called "Determination," which his friend Sans later succeeded in researching and putting into practical use. However, King Asgore plotted to use it for military purposes. After tricking Sans into mass-producing weapons, the King destroyed Sans's lab, blamed it on humans, and started a war against them.Superior in technology, the monsters defeated the humans and prospered by treating them like slaves. Regretting that his research was used for war, Sans spent 40 years secretly supporting humans with food and technology.Eventually, Sans and the humans revolted, leading to a second war. They overwhelmed the monsters with new weaponry, and Sans himself struck down King Asgore. After the battle, the monsters were sealed underground. Years later, the story begins when a young girl falls into that underground world.
