Your red blood cells contain hemoglobin, a protein that carries oxygen. Red blood cells need hemoglobin to deliver oxygen to your body’s organs and tissues. Every red blood cell contains thousands of hemoglobin molecules.

Neil A. Hanchard, M.B.B.S., D.Phil., Senior Investigator in NHGRI's Center for Precision Health Research, explains how the genes in our body code for different types of hemoglobin. He focuses on three types - Hemoglobin F, Hemoglobin A and Hemoglobin S.
