Mitochondrial diseases are often misdiagnosed, leaving patients searching for answers for years. Could a more accessible diagnostic tool change that? Konstantinos Maliaris, an electrical engineering student at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, presents his work on an instrument designed to study mitochondrial physiology.

Mitochondria play a critical role in converting nutrients into energy for our cells. Yet disorders affecting these essential structures are difficult to diagnose, with many patients seeing multiple physicians before receiving an accurate diagnosis. By lowering barriers to testing, this work has the potential to improve outcomes for patients worldwide and deepen our understanding of fundamental human biology.
