During Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May 2021 , the Bureau of Land Management - Utah reflected on the incredible legacy left by Chinese laborers who made the swift completion of the historic transcontinental railroad possible. In collaboration with the Utah State Historical Preservation Office, Chinese Railroad Workers Descendants Association and USDA Forest Service - Passport in Time program, a weeklong archaeological excavation in Terrace, UT was conducted during the week of the Transcontinental Railroad’s 152nd anniversary. The archaeological and cultural artifacts tell the story of Chinese workers who once populated the railroad town. Utah House Representative Karen Kwan, a descendant of those very laborers, shares her experience at the site.
