$What is the right choice for happy chickens? There is absolutely nothing natural about the egg industry and no type of egg you buy in the store will change the facts. Chickens in the wild lay around 10-15 eggs per year, but we have genetically manipulated them to produce nearly one egg every single day. This massive overproduction leads to horrible health issues such as bone fractures, osteoperosis, and internal organ prolapses. Combined with crowded, often filthy living conditions, hens in the egg industry experience high levels of stress, cannibalisation, inadequate access to food and water, ammonia burns, and even premature horrible deaths. That is if they even live past the first day of their life. Male chicks in the industry are considered “worthless” so they are usually ground up alive in macerators or suffocated in garbage bags. The females are put through the painful process of burning off their beaks to limit the damage they can do to each other when they peck due to boredom, stress, or sheer madness. After only 1 to 2 years, these chickens bodies wear out and are no longer able to produce as many eggs or “quality” eggs so the industry deems them unprofitable and they are killed, either by sending them to slaughter or en mass by carbon dioxide gas inhalation where their lungs turn the gas into carbonic acid and they die, often in great pain.
