After homecoming and other celebrations at all our campuses, we’re off to a strong start to the academic year
We announced a record 22 startups and 241 patents in the past fiscal year
And we continue to make incredible discoveries
Our researchers found a new way to deliver vaccines that could lead to better protection against pathogens like HIV and COVID-19
And found that sound combined with electrical body stimulation has the potential to treat chronic pain
We made a breakthrough in treating antibiotic-resistant infections through an antibacterial peptide inspired by human saliva
And found that even modest warming could dramatically alter forests in the Great Lakes region and southern Canada
Funding continues to be critical to our efforts and we’re getting it done
U of M Morris was awarded $260,000+ for the McNair Scholars Program by the U.S. Department of Education
While faculty at U of M Duluth and the Twin Cities were awarded a $750,000 NSF grant to support students underrepresented in STEM
We received a $3M NSF grant to implement a program to better educate students on environmental topics
And a $3.5M+ National Resource Center grant for international studies and African studies
We were also awarded nearly $22M to lead two Energy Frontier Research Centers
And in a BIG WIN, U.S. News & World Report ranked the U of M Twin Cities/Rochester 23rd among 227 Public National Universities
Ranked U of M Crookston No. 1 among Public Midwest Regional Colleges
Ranked U of M Duluth No. 6 among Public Universities in the Midwest
And ranked U of M Morris No. 8 among Public National Liberal Arts Universities
We also continue to be recognized for our efforts to support students, faculty, and staff
U of M Crookston was recognized by “Exercise is Medicine” as one of only 158 universities in the world for its work to create a culture of wellness
While U of M Rochester was honored for its commitment to equity and inclusion by “Colleges of Distinction”
And as honorary co-chair for the 2026 Special Olympics, President Gabel took part in the Polar Plunge and co-hosted the CEO breakfast as a kickoff for the games
