ABC 7 News - WJLA | UMD student group takes university to court over decision to cancel Oct. 7 event @7NewsDC | Uploaded September 2024 | Updated October 2024, 2 hours ago.
A Maryland federal court judge heard a case Monday in a First Amendment lawsuit against the University of Maryland (UMD) for its decision to halt students from holding protests or rallies on Oct. 7.
On Sept. 1, the University of Maryland told student organizers within UMD-SJP that they would no longer be able to host a vigil on Oct. 7, which they had previously gotten approval for, to mourn the lives lost along the Gaza Strip. Instead, the university banned all student-organized events from taking place on campus that day and decided to host only university-sponsored events that "promote reflection," according to a letter from University of Maryland President Darryll J. Pines.
