As Umar Khalid turned 39 on August 11, the activist's sixth birthday in prison, his mother made a rare public appearance.

"See how spaces have shrunk. They are now even afraid to allow an event," she said on JNU cancelling the discussion for Khalid's book, 'Fractured Communities'.
