Deep pocket cuts with smaller CNCs present some challenges. 2" cut-length bits are typically 4" overall, resulting in excessive deflection and severe chatter. Ultra-Shear's new Deep Reach Spirals have been engineered to solve this problem. First, we limited the overall length to just 3". The collet zone is 1" to accommodate ER-11 collets and still work perfectly with larger collets. The cutting zone is just 1" long, leaving more material in the tool body. The 1" space between the cutting zone and the collet zone is slightly reduced to clear the sidewall while maintaining rigidity. The result is a bit that can make 2" deep pocket cuts with minimal chatter and smooth walls.
We make the Deep Reach Spirals in two end styles…square and 1/8" radius. As a pair, these bits bring bowl and tray capabilities to CNC routers of all sizes, not just desktops. The 1" cut with 1" relieved clearance resists chatter as you step down into a pocket. And the 1/4" diameter gets into the tight corners of your designs.
