I bought the Ulanzi J12 as an affordable wireless audio microphone option. The audio levels coming out are very quiet, surprisingly so while the audio quality is you get what you pay for. So I wanted to figure out how I could boost the level in Final Cut Pro (the software I use to edit my video).
PLEASE NOTE: Loudness varies significantly throughout the video due to the testing, so please protect your ears. The video starts roughly at its loudest and then alternates between loud and not loud (original audio). Please set your volume accordingly.
I found that the Ulanzi J12 wireless microphone worked best when set to level 1 of noise reduction and then using the voice isolation parameter in Final Cut Pro at 50% (or thereabouts). Then adding a gain plugin to the audio and boosting as much as you want. I found I got occasional clipping so I put a limiter after that which I could drive pretty hard. That is what I found could give me the cleanest loud boost of all the options I tested.

The worst results I got were by using dynamic compression in Final Cut Pro (because I think that was lifting the quiet parts while squishing the loud parts and therefore it was also bringing up the noise floor.) YMMV but I don't think I would recommend compressors if you're trying to boost the level without clipping. I primarily did this test for myself as a troubleshooting exercise but if you have experience with this unit or any suggestions, I'm all ears.
Overall, I would recommend you save up for a more reputable wireless microphone audio solution. With the Ulanzi J12 you get what you pay for. They work and are convenient but the sound quality, specifically loudness, isn't quite there.
